In this creative project, I developed a collection of spoken words, poems, flash fiction, and profound thoughts inspired by real-life experiences. The resulting book, "Bad Ice Cream and Jollof Rice," reminds us that our struggles are valid, whether they resemble a disappointing dessert, a delectable rice dish—or even worse.
Scope
As a storyteller and poet, I had to put the emotions I felt during real-life scenarios into words and tell stories that evoke these emotions to the best of my ability.
My Challenges
Writing my own book was a thrilling idea but talking about sensitive topics in a way that didn’t scar the readers or strip it of its elements was something new. Given that it was a book that combined fiction with poetry and spoken word, I had needed to find a consistent tone throughout the book without switching genres. So, how do I write about sensitive issues while balancing the good with the bad?
Strategy
To tackle these challenges, I initiated a brainstorming session where I envisioned readers as therapy patients seeking solace through relatable experiences. The stories I crafted became a form of literary therapy, offering comfort without triggering distress or exacerbating emotional wounds. Key questions that guided my approach included: - How can I create a book that acknowledges pain while providing a sense of solace? - What strategies can I employ to discuss sensitive issues without overshadowing the beauty within? - Why would a reader choose to engage with a book that comes with a trigger warning? This brainstorming session served as the foundation for further research into my target audience: young adults. Understanding their concerns, aspirations, and emotional struggles was crucial in establishing a genuine connection.
Diving Deeper
In-depth research on the target audience (young adults) revealed that they constantly grapple with societal and parental expectations while navigating mental health issues and social vices. Though aware of these challenges, they often don’t receive enough grace, empathy, and comfort from the world around them.
Approach
To address these pain points, I infused empathy into my storytelling, aiming to provide a refuge for readers seeking compassion and healing. Before delving into the narrative, a clear trigger warning was provided, ensuring readers' emotional safety. The book commenced with a poignant poem titled "The Invocation," where I offered heartfelt prayers for the readers' well-being while acknowledging their vulnerabilities. Throughout the book, I adopted a warm and intimate tone, employing various writing styles—such as persuasive, narrative, expository, and descriptive—to captivate and engage readers. Interspersed between stories, carefully selected uplifting quotes act as a bridge, creating a seamless flow from one piece to another. Lastly, I collaborated with a designer to ensure the text and graphics harmoniously conveyed the intended emotions, enhancing the overall reading experience and evoking a sense of connection.
Outcome
"Bad Ice Cream and Jollof Rice" emerged as a heartfelt compilation that invites readers on a transformative journey through the complexities of human emotions. It offers solace, understanding, and reassurance that amidst life's trials, there is always room for healing, growth, and the celebration of both the bitter and the beautiful.
